It is Moondai, and so it is time for mischiefery with a mashery of Ogden Nashery (illustrated)! Your humble diarist also wishes you a Happy MLK Day, and although I did not find pomes written by Mr. Nash about Dr. King, I did find that they spoke in the same artists’ series on the same stage in the same year at Chapman University! So we will explore some ideas they had in common. Tonight’s selections are from This Day in Resistance History. But this post is an Open Thread, so please feel free to discuss and post your favorite illustrated pomes on any topic in the Comments also too!
The Politician
Behold the politician.
Self-preservation is his ambition.
He thrives in the D. of C.,
Where he was sent by you and me.

Not the least of which is lobbies.
He would not sell his grandmother for a quarter…
If he suspected the presence of a reporter.
He gains votes ever and anew
By taking money from everybody and giving it to a few
While explaining that every penny
Was extracted from the few to be given to the many.

Some politicians are Republican, some Democratic,
And their feud is dramatic,
But except for the name
They are identically the same.

OK, we disagree, but would MLK?
King was not a partisan and never endorsed any political candidate. In a 1958 interview, King said “I don’t think the Republican party is a party full of the almighty God nor is the Democratic party. They both have weaknesses … And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.”

Lines Indicted with all the Depravity of Poverty
If you are rich you don’t have to think twice about buying a judge or a horse,
Or a lower instead of an upper, or a new suit, or a divorce,
And you never have to say “when”
And you can sleep every morning until nine or ten.

Of course rich v. poor also concerned Dr. King,
This problem of poverty is not only seen in the class division between the highly developed industrial nations and the so-called underdeveloped nations; it is seen in the great economic gaps within the rich nations themselves.
