This Week In The War On Women, 1/22-28/23: VP Kamala Harris Edition

I think we don’t hear enough about what Kamala Harris is doing as our Vice President. So since I haven’t devised a good WOW rant, I thought instead I’d lead off with a few Vice President Kamala Harris items.

Politico reports that VP Harris is on her way to Germany for the Munich Security Conference, “Europe’s premier defense conference,” on the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine:

Just ahead of the one-year anniversary of the invasion, Harris will get a chance to update transatlantic-minded officials and experts on the progress the U.S.-led Western resistance has made and potentially preview further steps. Ukraine, for instance, has made no secret about its desire to field fighter jets, including F-16s, from the United States.

USA Today reports that VP Harris had a meeting to listen to the concerns of Black civil rights leaders and other stakeholders, to try to provide more help where the administration can to improve the lives of Black voters. The framing of the article was a little absurd, with the title, “Democrats have a problem with Black male voters. VP Kamala Harris is quietly trying to fix it”. This is only a problem relative to Black female voters, who vote for Democrats 95% of the time — whilst Black male voters vote for Democrats 87% of the time. By that measure, Democrats have a bigger problem with every other voting demographic. But whatever, it’s good that they’re listening.

Harris has been holding listening sessions with civil rights leaders, abortion rights activists, students and others.

And the Pasadena Star-News reports that “Vice President Harris visits Monterey Park; meets with victims’ families,” performing duties that we wish never had to be performed:

Vice President Kamala Harris, on Wednesday, Jan. 25, visited the scene of the worst mass shooting in Los Angeles County’s history to meet with the families of 11 people killed and another nine injured in Monterey Park.

Harris placed flowers — a large bouquet made up of white roses, yellow lilies, and palm fronds wrapped in white — on a memorial at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio, where the deadly attack took place late Saturday.

-snip-

Harris met privately, behind closed doors, with family members and first responders at the Langley Senior Center — which has served as a counseling and support center for victims’ families this week — and was also scheduled to meet with public officials, including Sheriff Luna.

Those were the major vice presidential events for this week that I found in a search today. I am not sure how this compares with previous VPs — it doesn’t seem like we hear from them much. But I wonder if Biden is giving her ceremonial and policy duties both domestic and global, hoping to increase the likelihood that she will take over after his terms in office.
